You’ll find gimme wines across the board from Bordeaux to Central Otago, including choices from plenty of small regions and some real treats off the beaten track. Fairly, in some cases excellently priced.

Champagne Delamotte Brut NV | $118 |
| Delightful and fresh champion of a wine with a fine elegant structure. Terrific price for one of the foremost Champagne houses. |
Schlumberger Les Princes Abbes Riesling 2006, France, Alsace | $480/$160/$96 |
Chateau d'Esclans Esclans Rose 2007, France, Provence | $690/230/138 |
| We know it sounds $$$ but it's one of the most fabulous rosé wines in the world! HK is should be all over rosé - perfect for the al-fresco feeling here! |
Bruno Giacosa Dolcetto d'Alba Sorano 2008, Italy, Piedmont | $475/$158/$95 |
| Bruno Giacosa is amongst the most respected wine makers in the world - his wines are truly expressive of fruit character but also of terrior. Elegance is the key word. Dolcetto is perfumed, with damson plum fruit and a softness to temper the ripe tannins - No oak and the lighter styles like this are often enjoyed a little cold. |
| Value Option { Best under £35/$50/bottom 20% of list PLUS any particularly rare bargains at ANY price point } |
|---|
Champagne Pol Roger Rose 2000 | $880 |
Innocent Bystander Pinot Gris 2008, Australia, Yarra Valley | $420/$140/$84 |
Domaine Cordier Morgon Cote de Py 2007, France, Beaujolais | $420/$140/$84 |
| 1st Date { Impressive but not too showy: circa £50 – but a wine that shows one’s connoisseurship rather than just size of wallet/expense account } |
|---|
Ramey Hudson Vineyard Chardonnay 2004, USA, Sonoma Valley | $930 |
| Have no illusion as to what you're ordering - It's a big US Chard. Plenty of oak, bags of varietal fruit expression, good acidity and great length. Perfect wine to have throughout a meal - will stand up to most foods. |
Fontodi Flaccianello delle Pieve 2004, Italy, Chianti, Tuscany | $960 |
| Guaranteed point scorer for a first date. It's big and spicy yet elegant and even silky. A rugged Tuscan aristocrat of a wine. 100% Sangiovese with some new oak treatment - 04 is a triumphant vintage and despite being young it's rewarding now, get it in a decanter to get the best from it. |
| Off the Beaten Track |
|---|
Chapel Down Bacchus 2006, England, Tenterden | $440/$147/$88 |
| OK vin d'Angleterre doesn't exactly roll off the tongue when thinking which wine to choose but this one slips down a treat with an oyster or two. Very well made, mineraly with a marked fresh apple mint aroma and hint of oily texture. Give it a go - its a fun simple wine. |
Marius 2004 France, Languedoc-Rousillon, Cabernet Sauvignon | $840 |
| Sometimes a bit of name-dropping is necessary and in this case the link to Ch. Latour is so close, it's too irresistible to ignore. It's from the family estate of Latour's supremo director/wine maker- 2004 being the first commercial release. I'm sure this wine will get more and more attention as time goes by so be in the know with this recommendation! |
| Treat Yourself { Remember when you used to get a bonus? not necessarily most expensive – but a real treat, rare, particularly good vintage etc } |
|---|
Magnum Champagne - Delamotte Blanc de Blancs 1996 | $2450 |
| "Look here, there's 6 of tonight and one bottle's never enough - let’s kick off with a magnum" A great wine in a great vintage at a very reasonable price too… |
Leroy Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes 1999, France, Burgundy | $2200 |
| Pale gold, almost delicate looking with soft fruit expression, stone faced and steely mineral character synonymous with Meursault. Fabulous concentration and a lesson in how to use oak - not a whiff on the nose nor a hint on the palette. A truly great wine from the formidable Maison Leroy. |
Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 1988 , France, Rhone Valley | $2750 |
| Southern Rhône - the best value wines in the world? May not be absolute but it’s hard to overlook this statement. You’d never find one of top wines from one of the top producers from a top mature vintage in Bordeaux, Burgundy or Barolo anywhere near this price, so splash out on this bench mark wine! |
| Crowd pleaser { Well known, trusted producer, region or varietal. No surprises, no disappointments } |
|---|
Pazo de Senorans Albarino 2006, Spain, Galicia | $540/$180/$108 |
